Biography

I was born in Gorliz, a small village near Bilbao in the north of Spain, and I grew up in that same area. I started ear-training and piano lessons at age 6 and I showed interest in improvisation from an early age on. As a teenager I listened to R&B, British Pop, Soul and Garage bands, and I performed often on organ, guitar, bass and blues harp with different local bands.

I started to get interested in Jazz by listening to Jimmy Smith and, after finishing High School at age 18, I moved to the Netherlands to study Jazz Piano at the “College for the Arts Arnhem”.

There I had the chance of studying with Rob van der Broek, Robert Jan Vermeulen, Henk Haverhoek, and Joop van Erven among others and I attended masterclasses by John Taylor, Bob Berg, David Kikoski, Bert van den Brink, etc. I discovered the recordings of Bud Powell, Tete Montoliu, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Mc Coy Tyner, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett, which enlightened and inspired me while enriching my musical sensibilities.

At age 21 I moved to Paris, where I took private lessons with Bernard Maury and I played every week at the « Goutte d’ or » in Barbes with a trio featuring Sebastien Gastine (Upright Bass) & Jo Quitzke (drums). A year later, after winning a scholarship I moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music where I studied piano with Laszlo Gardony, Danilo Perez, Ray Santisi, Paul Schmeling, Alain Mallet, and Alon Yavnai among others.

While in Boston (1997-2001) I played sessions, concerts and did recordings with a lot of musicians from all around the world, to name a few: George Garzone, Billy Pierce, Giovanni Hidalgo, Oscar Stagnaro, Francisco Mela, Peter Slavov, Yosvany Terry, Tim Mayer, John Pierce, Joshua Davis, Ferenc Nemeth, Danielle Camarda, Samuel Rohrer, Matthias Künzli, Ben Zwerin, Tony Escapa, Victor Mendoza Latin Big Band, Jaleel Shaw, Mark Small, Patrick Cornelius, Guillermo Delgado, Aldemar Valentin, Edward Perez, Jorge Perez-Albela, Julien Augier, Ramon Angel-Rey, Xavi Reija, Thomas Walter, Llibert Fortuny, Paco Charlin, Titus Vollmer, Franco Pinna, and more.
