Pedagogy

On this page I’ll be posting all sorts of materials in relation to music teaching, and more concretely in relation to topics dealing with piano and improvisation in Jazz and other related musical styles.

It will include videos talking about topics such as technique, improvisation, harmony, etc as well as transcriptions and their analysis and arrangements.

I’ve been teaching beginners, amateurs, and future professionals for more than 15 years in private schools, public conservatories and at the collegiate level. Some of my students have been admitted to some of the most prestigious colleges around the world such as the Berklee College of Music, The Superior Conservatory of Paris (CNSMDP), Hochschule für Musik Hans Eissler Berlin among others.

I started studying classical piano at the conservatory of my hometown, Bilbao, (with pianists Ignacio Amman, Mercedes Albaina, Agustin Vergara, Paloma Aristegui), at 18 I moved to Holland where I attended the Artez College of Music for 3 years (studying with pianists Rob van der Broek and Robert-Jan Vermeulen), at 21 I moved to Paris to study with Bernard Maury, and at 22 after obtaining a scholarship I moved to Boston to attend “Berklee College of Music” where I graduated with a “Bachelor for the Arts Degree” in piano performance. Back in Spain I obtained the equivalence of the “Titulo superior de música en la especialidad de Jazz”. I moved to Paris in 2012 where I obtained the “Diplôme d’ Etat » as well as the equivalence to the CA (Master), which are the two existing post Bachelor diplomas in pedagogy which are mandatory to teach in a public conservatory in France.I currently teach Jazz Piano and Improvisation at the “Charles Koechlin” Conservatory, in Verrieres-le-Buisson.

I’ve held multiple Masterclasses in differents styles of Jazz and modern music (Swing, Bebop, Afrocuban, Brazilian, Funk-Fusion, Flamenco, etc) in Spain, France, USA, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, etc) with stylistically diverse musicians and educators such as: Oscar Stagnaro, Jaleel Shaw, Bruce Arkin, Patrick Cornelius, Thomas Walter-Maria, Xavi Reija, Ramon Angel Rey, Jorge Perez Albela, Gilad Hekselman, Ziv Ravitz, Edward Perez, Borja Barrueta, Victor Celada,  Gere, …

Currently I’m busy with a pedagogical/concert project untitled « Classics with Jazz sauce » which consists of a series of arrangements of classical works by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Albeniz, Scriabine, Brahms, Bach, etc in different rhythms for a Jazz ensemble. The goal of this Project is to get both classical music students interested in Jazz (improv, rhythm, harmony) and Jazz-focused students to get interested in classical repertoire to improve their technique, sound and repertoire.

This trio features Etienne Mallet on double bass and Geoffrey Cormont on drums. We’ve been rehearsing weekly for almost a year now, and we’ll record very soon to share it with you all.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me via the “contact” page if you’re interested in taking piano lessons (at my parisian home studio or via skype) or in organizing a Masterclass with any of my projects (Trio, « Classics à la Jazz », sextet, duo, solo).

All right, it’s time to go practice!
