Born in Gorliz (Biscay), a town near Bilbao, to a French mother and a Basque father, I began taking piano and solfège lessons at the age of six. By the age of thirteen, I was playing keyboards in rock and British pop bands, while also exploring other instruments such as drums, electric bass, guitar, and blues harmonica.
I discovered jazz through listening to records by Jimmy Smith, and was instantly captivated by this musical language—one whose rules I did not yet fully understand. After completing my secondary studies at eighteen, I moved to the Netherlands to study jazz piano at the College for the Arts Arnhem.
There, I studied piano with Rob van der Broek and Robert-Jan Vermeulen, and attended masterclasses with John Taylor, Bob Berg, David Kikoski, and Bert van den Brink, among others. All of them introduced me to a world that was completely unknown to me at the time. My musical ear began to develop through active listening and studying the recordings of Bud Powell, Tete Montoliu, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett.
At the age of twenty-one, I moved to Paris, where I studied with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Bernard Maury, a former student of Nadia Boulanger. At the same time, I began performing weekly with my first trio (Joe Quitzke, Sébastien Gastine) at the club La Goutte d’Or, as well as at other Parisian venues such as Cithéa, Sunset, and Baiser Salé.
At the age of 22, after receiving a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, I crossed the Atlantic to Boston, where I studied piano with Danilo Pérez, Ray Santisi, Laszlo Gardony, Paul Schmeling, Alain Mallet, and Alon Yavnai. I was also awarded the Richard “Carrot” Hornbrook Scholarship for academic merit.
During my time in Boston, I performed with numerous musicians from around the world, among them: George Garzone, Billy Pierce, Giovanni Hidalgo, Oscar Stagnaro, Francisco Mela, Peter Slavov, Yosvany Terry, Tim Mayer, John Pierce, Joshua Davis, Ferenc Nemeth, Danielle Camarda, Samuel Rohrer, Matthias Künzli, Ben Zwerin, Tony Escapa, the Victor Mendoza Latin Big Band, Jaleel Shaw, Mark Small, Patrick Cornelius, Guillermo Delgado, Aldemar Valentín, Edward Perez, Jorge Perez-Albela, Julien Augier, Ramon Ángel-Rey, Xavi Reija, Thomas Walter, Llibert Fortuny, Paco Charlín, Titus Vollmer, Franco Pinna, Marco Panascia, among others.
I graduated in December 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and returned to Spain, where I have since performed in numerous clubs, festivals, and theaters across the country.
I resided in the Basque Country during the periods 2000–2002 and 2007–2008, where I performed with musicians such as Víctor Celada, Andrzej Olejniczak, Mikel Andueza, Jose Guereñu, Víctor de Diego, Tato Gracia, Julio Andrade, Malu Garay, Borja Barrueta, Raúl Sainz de Rozas, Jon Piris, Fabi Acarregi, Dani Pérez Amboage, Itxaso González, Ander García, Gorka Iraundegi, Elsa García, among others.
In Madrid, during 2002–2003 and 2008–2009, I played with Dani García, Carlos Ibáñez, Juanma Barroso, Inoidel González, Toño Miguel, Miguel Benito “Pete”, Jorge & Maikel Vistel, Tuti Fernández, Loque, Larry Martin Band, Noah Shaye, Eva Cortés, Miguel Blanco & Afrodisian Jazz Orchestra, Iñaki Arakistain, Javier Moreno, Alain Pérez, Irene Shams, Julio Daud, Martín Leiton, Norman Hogue, Santi Ibarretxe, Israel Sandoval, among others.
From 2003 to 2007, I was based in Barcelona, collaborating with Anton Jarl, Tom Warburton, Marc Ayza, Dimitri Skidanov, Andy Moetz, Bruce Arkin, Juan Rodríguez Berbin, Danilo Pinheiro, Jon Robles, Nono Fernández, Raynald Colom, Rai Ferrer, Ignasi Zamora, Joan Díaz, Oriol Saña, Pau Sastre, Miguel Pino, Xavi Reija, Ramon Ángel-Rey, Jordi Bonell, Luiz Ode, Paco Perera, Luismo Valladares, Jeffe Otto, Ana Rossi, Ángela Cervantes, Aurelio Santos, David González, Dani Domínguez, Giulia Valle, Soler, Enrique Oliver, Guishermo Carrizo, Matías Míguez, Iñaki Arnal, Iván Kovacevic, Juan Luis Castaño, Luna Cohen, Marc Miralta, Mariano Steimberg, Miguel Ballester, Mustapha Bouchou, Nadia Basurto, Pere Loewe, Pinyu Martí, Roberto Faenzi, Fredrik Carlquist, Rocío Faks, Salvador Toscano, Toni Solà, Vicenç Soler, Vicenç Solsona, among many others.
From 2009 to 2012, I lived in the French Basque Country, where I performed with Stéphane Barbier, Pascal Ségala, Éric Pérez, Jean-Marie Ecay, Jo Krause, Gonzalo Tejada, Jorge González, Alejandro Mingot, Iker Piris, Éric Oxandaburu, Vincent Thomas, Juanma Urriza, Aritz Luzuriaga, Federico Marini, Aurora Arteaga, among others.
In 2012, I relocated to Paris, where I have since performed regularly in various projects with outstanding musicians such as Julien Augier, Shankar Kirpalani, Josiah Woodson Quintet, Philippe Maniez, Coki Sarria, Lukmil Pérez, Alex Terrier, Étienne Mallet, Geofrey Cormont, Philippe Monge, Bruno Schorp, François Poitou, Tore Velden, Jean-Pascal Molina, Damien Françon, Gérald Toto, Shauli Einav, Sandro Serafa, Lionel Boccara, Zachary Abraham, Olivier Robin, Mauro Gargano, Yoni Zelnik, Ricardo Izquierdo, Carlos Mejías, Charlotte Wassy, Mathias Lévy, David Prez, Romain Pilon, Damien Varaillon, Stéphane Adsuar, among others.
While living in Paris, I obtained both the DE (Diplôme d’État) in Jazz Piano and the CA (Certificat d’Aptitude) in the same specialization. I taught Jazz Piano and Ensemble classes at several public conservatories in the greater Paris region until December 2018.
In January 2019, I briefly relocated back to Bilbao, where I launched a music academy in the city center under the name The Piano Studio. During that time, I also held a teaching position at the Conservatorio Superior de Navarra and continued my artistic work, despite the lockdowns and subsequent travel restrictions.
Since September 2020, I have been based in the beautiful city of Málaga, during what we now refer to fondly and ironically as the time of the beloved and unforgettable pandemic (…). There, I have served as Jazz Piano Professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga, while collaborating with various projects on the local and Andalusian music scene.
Currently, I lead a regular trio with the outstanding musicians Francis Posé and Rajiv Jayaweera, exploring several repertoires (original compositions, jazz arrangements, and standards). I also lead a Latin/Jazz quintet and collaborate regularly with numerous local musicians and various musical projects.
I have performed concerts in the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, Ecuador, Portugal, Italy, and Switzerland, with notable venues and festivals including:
Montreux Jazz Festival, Madrid Jazz Festival, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Teatro Nacional Sucre (Quito), MACBA Museum (Guayaquil, Ecuador), Hotel Puerta de América (Madrid), Auditorio de la Villa de Madrid, Getxo Jazz Festival, Ibiza Jazz Festival, Berklee Performance Center (Boston), New York University, Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, Harvard Faculty Club (Boston), Fat Cat (New York), Sunset Club (Paris), among others.
I consider myself an eclectic, cosmopolitan, and borderless musician, driven by a natural curiosity. This openness has led me to explore not only the many subgenres within jazz but also other musical traditions—ranging from classical Western art music to funk, pop, rock, and the rich rhythmic diversity of world music: Latin, Brazilian, flamenco, Arabic, African… I have collaborated with groups such as La Calle Caliente, Filhos de Ogum, Afrodisian Latin-Flamenco Jazz Orchestra, Tuti Fernández Flamenco Project, Paulinho Lêmos, and Basido (Gnawa music), among others.
