“SOLO & DÚO”

I started playing classical piano, studying at the Conservatory of Bilbao with Agustin Vergara, Mercedes Albaina, Paloma Aristegui and Ignacio Amman, and I played actively in local rock and pop bands as a teenager.

Then I went on to study with Rob van der Broek and Robert Jan Vermeulen at the “Artez College of Music” in Netherlands, with Bernard Maury in Paris and with Danilo Perez, Ray Santisi, Laszlo Gardony,Paul Schmeling, Alon Yavnai, Allain Mallet and Edward Bedner (classical repertoire) while studying at Berklee Boston.

I’ve been a semifinalist at the “Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition” in 2003, as well as a finalist of the “Tete Montoliu” competition in Spain in 2005.

I’ve performed solo concerts among others at the following venues: Hotel Arts/Reina Sofia Barcelona, hotel Puerta de America Madrid, Hotel Carlton Bilbao, at Jesus Polanco’ s house (Président Prisa, Madrid), Casino of Biarritz, at Mr.&Mrs Bell (Boston), Rouchon Photography Studios (Paris 5th), at the wine Museum “ El Grifo” in Lanzarote, Hotel Hilton Quito (Ecuador), Hotel Grand Palace, (Montreux, CH).

I frequently play in duo settings as well, may it be accompanying singers, horn players or with other instrumentalists such as guitarists, bassists, percussionists…

Concerning the duos, we have a project going on with Cuban saxophonist Carlos Mejias: we both met in Madrid some years ago, and having a common Ibero-American background we decided to put together a repertoire based on Latin Music (Flamenco, afro-Cuban, tango, Brazilian,..)

The repertoire that I know is pretty varied and eclectic: it may consist on my own compositions and arrangements, on all time Jazz Standards, arrangements of Classical repertoire, latin standards or pop tunes.

If’ u’ d like me to put together a specific repertoire for a special occasion don not hesitate to contact me so that I can prepare a “wishlist” especially for you.

The solo piano format offers both the performer and the audience a wide range of sonic possibilities, textures, and intimate atmospheres that are not as easily highlighted or conveyed in other formats. Every register, the resonance, and the dynamics of the “king of instruments” can be fully perceived, down to the smallest detail—from a pianissimo to a fortissimo. The entire range of sounds emanating from the instrument reaches the attentive listener’s ear, transmitting and evoking a multitude of emotions that words simply cannot express.

Ultimately, the intimate nature of the solo piano format allows us to explore and express the instrument’s full sonic and emotional potential, and to share that experience with the audience. – Interplay with the audience (3-note song, Laszlo, Corea), free improvisation.

In the summer of 2017, I held a solo piano residency with around 12 concerts at a club called “Blue Moon” in Loredo, Cantabria. That residency led me to organize and arrange several thematic solo piano repertoires that I had previously been working on in other formats. This gave rise to monographic programs on Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Standards, and Latin/Brazilian Jazz, among others.

Besides the classic American jazz piano style (Powell, Tristano, Monk, Peterson, Evans, Tyner, Jarrett, etc.) and Latin jazz piano (Chucho Valdés, Emiliano Salvador, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Danilo Perez, Helio Alves…), I have also developed a strong interest in contemporary European jazz pianists such as Tete Montoliu, Michel Petrucciani, Enrico Pieranunzi, and John Taylor.

In my Jazz Piano classes at the Málaga Higher Conservatory of Music, I’ve gradually incorporated more contemporary pieces and works by European jazz pianists into the classic jazz piano repertoire, allowing me to explore and teach a diverse and extensive body of work.

In addition to the solo piano format, I’ve also performed in duo settings on many occasions, accompanying either singers or other instrumentalists. Some of the musicians I’ve had the chance to collaborate with in duo format include: American artist Patrick Cornelius, vocalist Malu Garay (with whom I produced an album alongside Guere, Enzo Filippone, Luis Perdomo…), Brazilian guitarist and singer Luiz Ode, Cuban saxophonist Carlos Mejías “Chepe,” Catalan singer Clara Sallago, French vocalist Gérald Toto (tribute to Claude Nougaro), and Norwegian singer Hanne Tveter, among others.

In 2020, I recorded my first solo piano album titled *Soleil d’Hiver*, featuring exclusively original compositions. That same year, I also recorded a duo album with French double bassist Eric Surmenian titled *Contemplative Expressions*. Both albums were released by the Errabal Jazz label.

In concert, I am currently presenting the original music from *Soleil d’Hiver* as well as several other thematic repertoires.
